The
106th
“Golden
Lionâ€
Infantry
Division
was
activated
at
Fort
Jackson
,
South
Carolina
, on
13
March
1943
. After
participating
in the
Number
5
Tennessee
Maneuvers
, the
division
transferred
to
Camp
Atterbury
,
Indiana
, and
subsequently
deployed
to the
European
Theater
of
Operations
(ETO)
in
November
1944
. The
106th
was
activated
as a
“triangularâ€
division
organized
around
the
422d
,
423d
and
424th
Infantry
Regiments
.
However
, during the
Battle
of the
Bulge
, the
422d
and
423d
Infantry
Regiments
were
virtually
destroyed
near
Schonberg
in the
Schnee
Eifel
salient
.
Accordingly
, the
two
regiments
were
replaced
with the
3d
and
159th
Infantry
Regiments
.
Although
the
422d
and
423d
Infantry
Regiments
were
reconstituted
, they
did
not
rejoin
the
106th
Infantry
Division
until
May
1945
. The
division
returned
to the
United
States
on
1
October
1945
and was
inactivated
the
following
day
at
Camp
Shanks
,
New
York
. In
1942
a
typical
infantry
regiment
consisted
of a
headquarters
and
band
, a
headquarters
company
, a
service
company
, an
anti-tank
company
, a
cannon
company
, and
three
infantry
battalions
. In
March
1943
the
basic
infantry
regiment
was
reorganized
to include a
headquarters
, a
headquarters
company
, a
service
company
, an
anti-tank
company
, and
three
infantry
battalions
. Each of the
three
infantry
battalions
consisted
of a
headquarters
and
headquarters
company
,
three
rifle
companies
and a
heavy
weapons
company
.
