Donations
to Wakeman General Hospital
10/09/2023 Hope you are well. I noted on the front page of indianamilitary.org, that you have retired. I hope that someone can pick up and keep it going / updated. Understand that it is a lot of work, and trying to keep up with ever-changing hardware and software technologies can be a bugger.Thank you very much for your service – not just in creating and maintaining the site, but also for your military service, extending back to the 60’s.
We spoke a long time ago. My name is Steve Ruch, and I am one of two grandsons of Frank Wakeman. My brother and I went down to Atterbury this past summer and donated much of Colonel Wakeman’s affects – a uniform, the artists’ working drawing of the portrait which hung in the hospital, his ceremonial sword, and many clippings, pictures, and memorabilia that our Mother (Col Wakeman’s daughter) had passed along to us. The Base Commander and the director of the museum / public service were present and were very appreciative. Again, thank you for all that you have done, and may God bless you and your family. Steve Ruch
Thank you. That was very nice of you and
your family.
Did you know that the new VA Clinic now
located on Camp Atterbury grounds, is named
the Wakeman VA Clinic? I "get" to
spend a lot of time there. A wonderful
advantage for all veterans, and best of all,
it keeps the name going forward. The Governor
of Indiana, future vice president, and now a
candidate for president, Mike Pence,
participated in the dedication ceremonies,
and I was fortunate enough to help him write
his speech. The Clinic is located just a
short distance East of the former hospital
grounds.
I hope to see some of those artifacts next
trip to the museum.
Again - Thanks for the kind comments.
Please keep in touch.
Jim

From the day of activation. "Mission Accomplished has been the objective of all personnel at
Wakeman General Hospital. At last these two words are fact. On December 31st Wakeman will close its doors. Looking back over the many months. both the former and present personnel, civilian and military, will remember the faces of patients, their trials and tribulations which each has faced and overcome so well. Familiar scenes will be remembered - the chow lines. the Recreation hall, the athletic field, the blare of the PA system, the football games, occupational therapy, Colonel Blocker, retreat parades, Prisoners of War, the Cincinnati Reds, the bands from the Circle, Station WAKE, the Information Hour, the PX, the library, the music room. Each will have his own memorable high-light of Wakeman. |
