SHOULDER PATCH: Circular patch containing black buffalo on olive drab backgrounds patch is black-bordered. In days of hostile Indians Negro troops on border patrol killed buffaloes and in winter time used skins to clothe themselves. Indians termed them "Black Buffaloes."

HISTORY: Organized in October 1917, at Camps Function, Grant, Dodge, Upton,, Meade and Dix with almost entirely
Negro personnel; assembled at Upton in June 1918. By 18 July 1918, division was assembled in France. In August it relieved 5th Division in St. Die Sector, remaining in line until mid-September. After being in reserve in Meuse-Argonne campaign IT launched an offensive 10 November from heights on both banks of Moselle. Division returned to u. b. in February 1919. a ACTIVATION DATE: 15 October 1942.

TRAINING UNDER AGF: Upon activation, assigned to III Corps.. Sefond Army At Ft. McClellan, Alabama, going to Ft. Huachua, Arizona, in April 1943, under Third Army. In July it was assigned to VIII Corps, Third Army, and from 7 February to 3 April 1944, participated in Third Army maneuvers, in Louisiana.
DEPARTED U. S. FOR FOREIGN DUTY : ?_2 September 1944 for North Africa.
RETURNED TO U. S.: 26 November 1945.

COMBAT HIGHLIGHTS: During week of 20 August 1944 st units committed to
action under Fifth Army in Italy. Initial action a defensive one.
First major offensive action was participation in crossing of Arno
River, division having entered combat in upper Arno Vallcy. First
full attack as division came in February when 92d "kicked off"
along line of Time LaFoce, sane three and a half miles south of enemy
stronghold of Massa; the Montc Canale, tremendous peak dominating entire
coastal terrain, has divisions objective. Heavy losses were suffered
in vicious fighting in Ligurian area. After V-J Day the division
was scheduled to return to U. S. and upon return to this country
was inactivated.
